Doctor Clavel Foundation is an initiative of neurosurgeon Dr. Pablo Clavel and his team, inspired by the humanitarian intention to help those who need it most.
In the Foundation we work with hospitals in developing countries, to improve the quality of life of their patients and to encourage the study of diseases related to spinal pathologies.
Since 2013, we have been working to bring neurosurgery to where it is urgently needed. Our project is carried out in Adama, capital of the state of Oromia, the most populated region of Ethiopia. In Ethiopia there are more than 105,983,124 inhabitants and there are only twenty surgeons.
We are EFFORT, DEDICATION and HOPE
We are the only Neurosurgery Foundation in Ethiopia.
“It always seems impossible until it's done.” – Nelson Mandela
At Doctor Clavel Foundation we carry out frequent missions. Our job is to visit patients, operate on those who need surgery, train doctors and equip them with hospital equipment. We provide training to the staff of Hospital Medical College so that our work does not stop when we leave, sharing our knowledge so that local professionals can treat patients and train the next generation of neurosurgeons in the region.
We currently carry out about 6 missions a year, but the goal is to achieve one a month.
A GREAT MEDICAL TEAM, A CLEAR OBJECTIVE, A MISSION TO CARRY OUT.
Abebe arrived at Adama Hospital on foot after a week's walk from his home. He lives in a remote village in the countryside and lacks his own transport or means to get one. When we received him and asked his age, he could not tell us exactly. About 60 years old, approximately. He wore a large turban covering his head and came barefoot. Despite his old and worn-out clothes and his tired appearance, Abebe had a smile that spread tenderness and kindness. We trusted him. He told us the reason he had walked to Adama Hospital. A dispute over land issues with a neighbor resulted in Abebe being hit in the head with a rock. After removing the turban, we could observe an open fracture filled with pus and surrounded by flies. The lack of basic care and first aid was immediately apparent.
The surgical team intervened to perform a thorough cleaning, remove the pieces of broken bone, carry out a careful hemostasis and close the wound. We ended his care with antibiotic therapy and analgesia.
After a great job carried out by Dr. Tewodros and Dr. Clavel, Abebe was already in better condition, with slight discomfort, but without losing that smile with which he gratefully thanked us for the treatment received. One of our best rewards.

Aneji came to us with a diagnosis of thoracic-spinal intradural tumor. Dr. Tewodros, after examining the 48-year-old woman, decided to operate in a prone position. The intervention was predictably difficult as the tumor was lodged in an area of difficult access. During surgery, and to further complicate things, Aneji began to bleed copiously. Thanks to the forethought of the team that had brought several hemostats (lacking at Adama Hospital), the hemorrhage could be stopped and with the help of Dr. Clavel, the tumor was finally removed.
We visited Aneji in the following days to happily verify that the patient was evolving favorably.
A success thanks to the collaboration of the team and a good amount of medical supplies that we carry with us.

Mireia is 31 years old and traveled on the mission to Ethiopia in June 2017. It was her first experience as a volunteer nurse abroad. Keep in mind that carrying out your first mission to Africa always becomes an adventure.
In Adama she was able to work hand in hand with the Foundation's medical team, and carry out essential tasks so we could perform our work at the Addis Abeba Hospital, such as establishing ties with the local nursing team and sharing with them our know-how and methodology, holding practical workshops on disinfection and hand washing, improving the stocking of an instrument case to make it more efficient or preparing a surgical table prioritizing the safety of the equipment and the patient.
Mireia returned delighted after her mission and with many experiences that made her reflect and see things from another perspective. That is why she is already thinking of returning on another mission.

An 8-year-old boy had suffered a fall down a cliff and had lung contusions and complete paraplegia. It was necessary to perform a dorsal spine scan immediately to assess the existence of a fracture. We were told that it was impossible to perform the test because the child's family did not have the money to pay for it. Without thinking twice, the members of the mission decided to pay out of their own pockets for the scan. When we received the results and after carefully examining them, we saw it was possible to resolve the boy's fracture with the technical means available to us and give him an opportunity to recover strength in his legs. We were all overjoyed!
Later, an angry discussion between the child's relatives and some doctors made us fearful. Apparently, the child's relatives refused to let us operate on him. They believed that the anesthesia was going to kill him ... Or so they had heard. After calming everyone down and postponing the operation, hours later, we returned to see the child. He had disappeared! The family had completely refused to consider the option to operate and had taken him away.
It is sometimes like this, and despite the anger, frustration, helplessness and desolation, you realize that you are in a different country with different people, and even if it is difficult, you must learn to respect their beliefs.

After a long day of work, on the trip back home, Mohamed's life changed completely. A traffic accident caused a deformity in his neck; his legs hardly fulfilled their function and karate went from being his favorite hobby to becoming an impossible dream. The diagnosis confirmed a dislocation at C7-T1. Our medical team carried out a risky intervention that could have left this young person quadriplegic. After fixing his spine and releasing his spinal cord, Mohamed evolved so fast that he challenged the doctors to a karate match to show them how strong he was. Which goes to show the importance of attitude and the determination to improve.

A mother desperate to save her little one entered the door of the Mnazi Moja hospital. Firdausi was a six-month-old baby struggling to survive after being born with hydrocephalus. The Foundation's medical team quickly intervened placing a ventricle-peritoneal valve in the child's head; his life was saved. During the following days, Firdausi recovered in the arms of his mother who, crying with emotion, did not know how to thank us for the miracle that our team had carried out.

Little Aiman arrived at the Stone Town hospital when she was only 18 days old. She was born with spina bifida associated with myelomeningocele in the lower back. We were able to alleviate the infection with an antibiotic treatment and performed a reconstructive surgery on this girl, who barely measured 40 centimeters. Unfortunately, within a few days and while Aiman was recovering with her mother, the wound became infected. After a new and complicated intervention, finally she improved. The newborn astonished us all with her resistance!
